Giambattista Valli

Italian fashion designer

Giambattista Valli sent out a collection of hits ideal for debutantes and seasoned couture customers alike. He opened with a series of ivory silk tunics and trouser combos, some plain and others with crystal and pearl-encrusted necklines, or displays of painterly botanicals. All had pressed creases, an idea spotted before at Gucci, Celine and Prada – Valli cited the same inspiration as Alessandro Michele; a girl who is traveling, unpacking her creased clothes from a suitcase… – but no matter, it made proceedings feel contemporary. He followed those with lacy billowing ballgowns and even Eighties mini dresses in duchess satin strewn in crystals and feathers; others, trailing huge ruffle-edged trains. Above all else, this was a celebration of unabashed femininity and the front row Valli girls – from Olivia Palermo to Lauren Santo Domingo and Bianca Brandolini – were no doubt planning their looks for the season ahead.

LET'S START TO SEE 2017HIS AMAZING COLLECTION

A/W 2017

THE gulf between Paris’s ruling designers who specialise in traditional techniques that translate to traditional (and uncompromisingly beautiful) collections, and the edgy upstarts who upend traditional techniques to forge a new brand of hard-edged, conceptual Parisian chic has widened this season.

Designers, like Giambattista Valli, who deal in the former shouldn’t be shaken by the skewing of classic French style in the hands of (among many others) the Vetements clan, Masha Ma, or Y-Project. Indeed, the Parisian houses that lean towards old-fashioned femininity currently have the ideal platform to deliver an antidote to the visually-challenging scenes that are coming out of the capital for autumn/winter 2017; challenged to push harder against the opposing fashion forces.
